COLLEGE PREP TESTS

SAT Subject Tests

SAT Subject tests are offered in 5 general subject areas:

  • English
  • History & Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Languages

Within these general subject areas, there are more specific subjects. Within the Science area, for example, there are Chemistry, Biology (2 different kinds) and Physics. Speak with an advisor and the college admissions people if you are unsure as to which tests you may need.

These tests are useful in demonstrating to colleges the student's mastery of a particular subject. Some colleges require the student to take one or more SAT Subject Tests for admittance for certain majors. An engineering major may, for instance, need to take the Physics or Chemistry Subject Test as well as both the Level I and Level II Mathematics. Even if the colleges to which the student is applying do not require any of these tests, it might be a good idea to take one closest to your chosen major to demonstrate your depth of knowledge in the field.

It is good to check with the colleges early in order to give the student time to schedule these tests. It is also wise to take these tests as soon as possible after completing the course of study in high school when the material is still fresh in the student's mind.
