PREPARING FOR COLLEGE
College Prep Tests
College Prep Tests are standardized tests that taken in most high
schools can end up
saving a family thousands of dollars in college costs.
The most popular of these tests are the SAT and the ACT. You may find that
colleges on the east coast and mid-atlantic require students to take the SAT
whereas colleges in the mid-west and western states lean more toward the
ACT. But both are popular now and most colleges accept either or both. This works
well for the student because the tests are so different that some people perform
better on the SAT than they might on the ACT or vice versa. We recommend taking
both tests. However, if the student didn't want to take both, it's important to
understand the differences between the tests and which test is better suited for
your student's skill sets.

In addition to the SAT, some colleges depending upon the field of study may also
require the student to take SAT Subject Tests. For instance, if the student is
planning to major in one of the sciences, it's very probable that the college is
going to expect the student to take the corresponding SAT Subject test in either
Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics, and possibly also one or both of the Math SAT
Subject tests. Make sure you understand the college's requirements early in the
admission process so that the student has time to schedule these tests.
AP Tests are normally taken after completing the Advanced Placement
course(s) in high school. However, it's not necessary to have taken the AP course.
If your student has exceptional knowledge in a subject area then by all means
they should take the appropriate AP test. These tests can save you money in college and even
allow you to graduate in less time than the traditional four years.

CLEP Tests are offered in a variety of subjects. Some colleges will offer college
credits for a passing score. It's important to know if your college is one of
these schools that do offer college credits and what their criteria are. Like
the AP Tests, by demonstrating knowledge in a particular subject matter, the
student can shave thousands off the cost of tuition by receiving college credits
prior to even attending college.
These tests in themselves can be costly and time-consuming to the student who is trying to finish out high school at the same time. So it's important to know which tests are
necessary and which ones are more appropriate for your individual student. Click on any of the links on the left to learn more about these tests
and their benefits.
